MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDER

Welcome to our 26th quarterly newsletter. Our newsletter comes out the first week of March, June, September, and December. Comments and suggestions are always welcome.

Our big event this quarter is our OPEN HOUSE being held on June 16 at our headquarters in Santa Clara, CA.. At the open house we will be celebrating our 10th Anniversary as well as promoting our new partnership with Chart Industries. The IEEE CPMT chapter is co-sponsoring the event. More>>.

My book "How Reliable Is Your Product: 50 Ways to Improve Product Reliability" is now on iPad and Kindle and sales are going very well. In addition, we have already used as the textbook for our past three Design for Reliability seminars. Also, we continue to get great reviews. Here are a few of the reviews: Book_Interview, PCB News review, ECN Magazine review, SMT Magazine review, Amazon.com review. Or you can go to All Reviews to see all reviews in full.

The book is available for purchase at SuperStar Press or Amazon.com. You can preview the First 3 Chapters at How Reliable Is Your Product.

Clients ask us often how to evaluate their reliability program. The best method is a Reliability Assessment. We created this quick Self-Assessment tool you can use to get a baseline of your reliability program. See the Problem Solver section for a special offer if you take our Self-Assessment.

In May I visited over a dozen companies on the east coast from Rhode Island to Toronto, providing free one hour consultations and listened to what our clients need. Based on these visits, we will be coming out with a new framework of services to better serve our clients long-term. Stay-tuned for this.

We completely our 4th annual Reliability Symposium and it was a success. We had engineers traveling from around the world as far as Singapore attend the event. We also had people attend via webinar from as far away as the Czech Republic.

Conference season is underway with a number of great reliability conference back to back. We will be presenting and/or exhibiting at MD&M East on June 6, ARS on June 7-9, PHM on June 20-23, MD&M Chicago on Sept 20-22, and ASTR on Sept 28-30. See our NewsEvents for more information on each.

Our Free Webinars are getting an increasing number of attendees. Last quarter, we held free webinars on Solar Reliability, Design for Six Sigma, and Prognostics. This next quarter we will be holding a webinar on Simulation followed by Telecom Reliability, Advanced Solar Reliability and Medical Reliability. The webinars are held on the first Wednesday of each month.

We hope you enjoy the following newsletter. Our next newsletter will come out September 1st. Thank you for your continued support and interest.

- Mike Silverman, Managing Partner/Founder

Fred Schenkelberg of Ops gives Reliability Talk at ASQ NCBDG Roundtable @ Stellartech Research Corporation, Sunnyvale, CA

Fred will give a talk at the Northern California Biodevice Group of the American Society of Quality.

TITLE: Ensuring a Reliable Product

ABSTRACT: Every medical device has an expectation to be safe and reliable. Focusing on product reliability, this talk will lead a discussion around useful and not so useful practices. The terms we use and the methods employed possibly establish a valuable culture within an organization that permits the achievement of high quality and very reliable products. Using appropriate goals, measures, and tools to understand and discuss product reliability permits the appropriate tradeoff of design functionality, cost and time to market along with reliability.

The discussion is about series of interactions with a (compilation of) product development team as they struggle to resolve customer complaints about their product and transition to a market leader. The discussion will focus on reliability goals and measures, program and test planning, plus a touch on sample size determination.

Telcordia SR332 Reliability Prediction Procedure Updated

Telcordia SR332 Reliability Prediction Procedure Updated to Issue 3
The most popular reliability prediction guide, Telcordia SR-332, was recently updated to Issue 3. We have updated our prediction tool and can now provide predictions to this latest document. A few of the changes were:

- Updated failure rates
- New parts
- Updated Pi factors & descriptions

BACKGROUND: in the 60's and 70's the most popular reference document was MIL-HDBK-217. This document has not been updated since 217F Notice2 came out in the early 90's. Committees are working on the next generation 217 document but have not replaced 217. Back in the late 80's, Bell Communication Research (a division of Bell Labs and now called Telcordia), came out with their version to be used for commercial products. In the past 20 years, this reference document has become increasingly more popular and has been updated 9 times in the past 20 years to keep up with new technologies and changing failure rates. This latest revision, Issue 3, was released earlier this year (January, 2011).

May 19, 2011

Ops' Mike Silverman Receives Another Great Review on His New Book

PCB News writes "This is a very comprehensive volume--a book that you keep at your side, on your desk close at hand rather than up on your shelf. What I like about this book is the way that Silverman is able to take a pretty serious and, face it, a bit dry discipline and bring it to life with real world examples we can understand. His clear and interesting way of explaining sometimes difficult subjects reminds me of the late Carl Sagan."

TAKE A SELF ASSESSMENT

This quarter instead of solving a problem, we are asking our readers to take a Self Assessment.

Clients ask us all the time on how to evaluate their reliability program. The best method is a Reliability Assessment. We created this quick Self-Assessment tool you can use to get a baseline of your reliability program. If you take this self assessment and email us your scores, we will offer a copy of my new book. Offer is available for a limited time only.

How to improve your tolerance management capabilities and increase reliability

Delivering highly reliable quality products on time while maximizing profit requires very precise, efficient analytical tools that are effectively integrated with solid modeling systems. Product analyses must become comprehensive as the design matures through the PLM process. For tolerance management, this maturity evolves from conceptual functional interfaces and critical datum references, to accurate, well-defined acceptance criteria for parts, assemblies, tooling, and inspection processes.

Tribal Engineering accommodates a number of tolerance management needs through its unique dimensional analysis system that is engineered to support robust product development processes from design through manufacture. Unlike any other tool in the industry, Tribal Engineering’s solution is built on 3D Variation Behavior Modeling™ Technology and is fully-integrated with popular CAD software such as Pro/ENGINEER, CATIA V5, and SolidWorks.  Tolerance Management allows for precise sensitivity, statistical and worst case scenario tolerance analysis.

Tribal Engineering has streamlined the mechanical variation modeling process and enables users to get answers early in the design process and often. Reductions in rework, scrap, and engineering changes are common results of proper Tolerance Analysis implementation. Better understanding of dimensional sensitivities also leads to more reliable products where more attention is given to the parameters that truly matter in the final product.  Our clients are experiencing greater confidence in transitioning products from the design to the pre-production phases and prototype build reductions of 50-75%, resulting in fewer last minute changes, which are often very costly. Tribal Engineering addresses the need for precision through:

Better tolerance-optimization tools and processes
A more precise understanding of how tolerance specs and mfg variations impact product quality
The desire for a highly integrated solution with current CAD systems
The elimination of the difficulty in conducting reliable tolerance analysis on projects

Ops and Tribal are partnering on a few projects and will be collaborating on our September FREE Webinar entitled Integrating Simulation into a Reliability Program. This also goes along with our theme from our May FREE Webinar on Design for Six Sigma (DFSS).

High Technology OEM’s face significant increases in global competition, time to market pressures, and technological complexities, which result in higher risks for bringing new products to market. These risks drive the need for greater use of outsourced services. To reduce these risks, the PRG has developed a “one-stop-shop” of outsourced services that helps companies to bring new products to market. Engagements are tailored to business and product profiles, and partners work together to deliver services that range from initial concept through global logistics and repair.
